The Waterloo Storefront Art Window Concept In an effort to liven up the neighborhood, it is proposed that artists be allowed to use Northeast Shores Development Corporation available buildings as a place to show their work. The first idea, proposed by artist Erin Aleman, is to have people come together and place their favorite song lyrics (or possibly quotes or poems) in a collective fashion. Song lyrics have been suggested due to the proximity of the storefronts to the Beachland Ballroom and Music Saves. People will get together on a Saturday March 3, 2007, bringing scrap paper - old magazines, wrapping paper, and colorful paper, along with a pair of scissors. Erin will coordinate putting up the lyrics in an aesthetically appealing fashion. This is open to the general public. It is our hope that Arts Collinwood, neighborhood schools, and North Collinwood residents will be involved. If successful, this initial project could generate other ideas. Underutilized storefronts could be used as rotating art installations throughout the neighborhood. Owners of other neighborhood properties may find it desirable to allow art to be used to draw attention to their building and the neighborhood. What we want this project to do is to give the neighborhood a friendlier appearance and continue to spur interest in the Waterloo area. |

East 185th Street banners
have been installed on utility poles along the North Collinwood business district.
Red, white and blue and featuring the East 185th Street logo, the banners promote
the area as one of Cleveland’s leading shopping destinations.
“The banners are to welcome neighboring communities as well as local residents to this historic shopping area,” said Emily Jarratt, branch manager of the street’s Sky Bank, who headed a subcommittee of the East 185th Street merchants’ Association, which raised $13,500 for the project from local business and civic organizations. “Only the unusual cooperation of Cleveland’s public, private, non-profit and philanthropic sectors of our city could have made this project possible,” said Brian A. Friedman, Executive Director of Northeast Shores. |

Arts Collinwood Mission: We believe that a flourishing arts community enriches a neighborhood’s quality of life both economically and culturally. By partnering with local merchants, neighborhood associations, schools and artists, we hope to encourage more artists to live and work in North Collinwood. Our goal is to support a stimulating arts environment and to encourage continuing education in the arts by offering a wide variety of cultural opportunities for residents of all ages. |
