Beautiful Lake Erie
North Collinwood was first settled around 1800. Because of the abundance of orchards and vineyards, immigrants were attracted to the area which became the largest shipping point for grapes in the nation.

In the 1820s Ursuline nuns opened Villa Angela, a boarding school and academy for girls and a school for boys. St. Joseph High School opened its doors in 1953. In 1990 the two were merged and today Villa Angela St. Joseph High School is known for its high academic standards and sports ranking.

By the 1890s, industrial development accelerated following the expansion of the Collinwood rail yards, which had become the major switching center for the lake shore and Michigan Southern (New York Central) Railroad. The neighborhood grew as immigrants of various ethnic and racial backgrounds sought jobs along the railroad. In 1999, CSX Intermodal took over the yards, building a state-of-the-art facility.

Euclid Beach Archway

In 1894 Euclid Beach Amusement Park opened. It was closed in 1969 and today the only standing reminder of the past is the historic archway which now serves as the entranceway to the Euclid Beach senior high rise apartments. Parts of Euclid Beach have been incorporated into the Cleveland Lakefront State Park system which now connects to Wildwood Park and marina.

Collinwood was annexed to the city of Cleveland in 1910.
